Helmets are recommended for crash and in-flight failure protection of the head.

Helmets and headsets that have a chin strap need a quick release NATO plug on a short pigtail so that the wearer is not held into the airplane by the cord. The NTSB Safety Alert and its supporting video explain why. It is titled "Flight Helmet Cords Can Impede Egress" and may be seen at https://www.ntsb.gov/safety/safety-alerts/Documents/SA-068.pdf

The David Clark H10-60 passive headset has a removable plug. A spring clip holds it in place, and it would be too fiddly to remove in an emergency. However, the clip is easy to remove (I used a Dremel with a small cutoff wheel). It takes a firm pull to get the connector out of the headset, so I'm not worried about it coming off by accident.
