After returning from a practice flight, one of our pilots reported a rapid pitch oscillation in the stick out of a vertical maneuver. The oscillation stopped after going to idle and pulling to horizontal flight. A post-flight inspection revealed a cracked elevator trim tab, as shown in the pictures. The crack had probably started some time ago without being detected, before propagating all the way back on both sides of the control horn.

Looking at the design, it looks somewhat marginal with the horn riveted to only one side of the skin without further support, except for a doubler plate. This is the tab as originally built by Extra. The new tab will incorporate a design mod.

Fly safe!
